Red Wines - Primitivo

2009 Primitivo, Monterey

With origins in Croatia, Primitivo is known as the father of the Zinfandel grape as studies have shown links in their DNA. The first use of the name Primitivo can be found around the late 1800's. It is derived from the "primativus" or "primaticcio" which refer to the ability to ripen earlier than most varieties. Primitivo and Zinfandel share the same characteristic flavors of plum, fruit and spice. Like Zinfandel, Primitivo can be robust yet very smooth and drinkable. The 2009 vintage is deeply colored, rich, and concentrated with flavors of zesty cherry, clove, wild blackberry, raspberry and spice. The wine exhibits soft tannins and has 14.34% alcohol. We aged our Primitivo for 19 months in American Oak Barrels manufactured from Missouri wood. The wine was bin fermented, punched, pressed in a cool environment to preserve a fruity smooth characteristic. Only 125 cases were produced from about 2 tons of grapes. Ready to drink now, this is also a fine cellar wine which will exhibit "mature fruit" over next five years. Enjoy the wine while young for its charming, vibrant fruitiness which is a fine match for BBQ ribs and summer picnic fare.
