Red Wines - Barbera

2009 Barbera, Paso Robles

Dating back to the thirteenth century, Barbera is a dark-skinned red wine grape variety with origins in Italy's Piedmont region. Barbera was first planted in California in the 1880s and has since become one of the state's most widely planted varieties. The grapes for our 2009 Barbera came from two adjacent vineyards in the San Miguel growing area of the Paso Robles AVA. The wine was aged for 18 months in Oak. The barrels had been air dried 36 months, with toasted heads and staves to impart rich vanilla, berry and light spice. Lively and succulent, this Barbera is deep ruby in color, exhibiting a fruity, floral nose with flavors of currant, blackberry, cherries, vanilla and anise. High acidity and soft tannins make this an easy drinking young wine. An excellent wine for hearty stews and casseroles, savory roasts, pizza and pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces. Pairs well with bolder flavored cheeses such as Ginger's Goat Cheese with Herbes de Provence (available in the tasting room).
